So, I have a theory that could be disproved by today's tick, but may not be:
If today's tick gives us a sizable chunk, unlike those for the last few days, could it be that powerplay actually is a disadvantage to faction influence change?
The reason I say this is that when we were mission running for this war, we were having similar issues with affecting the influence other than days when I picked some up and we suddenly got a large chunk of progress. We put this down to tick delay, but I am not wondering (due to the progress of the war so far) whether this has something to do with powerplay and me being the only commander who isn't Powerplaying? The theory being that if you are power-playing, everything you do is for Avril Lavigne D and influence is shared out across all factions in her area, no matter who you specifically do them for.
This could be total bollocks, but I thought I would put my ideas down.

It's original thinking. It's not consistent with anything I've read but it is consistent with some of what we've seen (except that our biggest one-day influence gain this time has been in your absence).
I'm in a 'strategy meeting' for most of the day (there may be biscuits) so won't be able to look into this. Can someone volunteer to investigate?

Having had a look around it appears to be the opposite, the BGS has an effect on power play but not vice versa.
Basically the government type confers certain bonus to certain factions depending on what power play actions are taking place, for example ALD has a bonus in systems controlled by Patronage minor factions, meaning that ALD PP triggers are lower in these systems. However there is no transference in the opposite direction, the players actions in the BGS are not affected by their Power affiliation.
Sorry dude, good theory - but no dice.

Fair enough, I'm not in game today and tomorrow, but back Friday. We'll see what the percentages bring on these days, as you say, it should disprove this theory if the gains are high for the next few days.

Well, the fact that the bgs affects power play does mean that purr players are motivated to fuck with the bgs. But only in control systems.
