So, with the announcement that 2.1 will be going live on Thursday (anticipate not being able to get in game for a long time as their download bandwidth is maxed out). What can we expect to see and how will it affect the game in the short, medium and long term?
So far, from the discussions, I've heard there will be: Engineers and better combat AI. Anything else?

Better UI as well, particularly with regard to mission boards and outfitting. All mission-givers will now have persistent names and faces - giving us lots of RP-fodder. An extra tier is being added to faction relationships ('cordial'), between Neutral and Friendly, allowing for a longer arc. Engineers is a big topic. This vastly increases all the previous absolutes in the game, like jump range, top speed etc. You will be able to create ships with capacities far exceeding what we know. Missions will be improved - particularly the 'go here and wait' types. You will be given a series of increasingly specific instructions as to how to get to an objective. This looks useful: forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=246284

POI and USS are no longer going to be random. And will be scanable from super cruise.
Nav beacons will now have a purpose, scan them to receive system data and mission locations.
Traffic on planets, there will now be traffic going from and arriving on planetary settlements. The AI will now engage you in combat above the planets surface, dogfighting in gravity Mutha Fukka!

A whole new level to the forum meta as people find new ways to complain about the same things! Yes, but you could put 90% of the forum complainers on an infinite, flat plane and they'd still find a curbstone to trip over
