So, now that I have my general purpose python (sounds slightly wrong). What tips and tricks are there to assist with combat flying. I know that RK does some cunning things with toggling flight assist, what are these?

To turn, 4pips to engines, get speed in the blue zone, then FA-OFF and zero thrust, turn and continue as normal.

There are a few tips I would give for flying the Python in combat.
If you haven't already learn how to use flight assist off and boost in combination to perform fast turns. Bind a button for Flight assist off and zero throttle. Really helps with quick turns. Get used to shifting pips constantly, the Python really responds to pip management.
With practice you can give it a worrying amount of maneuverability. The big assets is that it behaves really well with FAoff, as it's not at all twitchy.
Have fun, I love playing with my Python!

3x large fragment cannons with 2x medium gimballed beams is very effective, cheap and easy on the capacitor.

Not that you need to be easy on the capacitor in a Python.
