Dexter Vex - as with the others in the series, a reference for each other and ourselves.
Personality
-He exudes a certain menace. Even his few friends are a little bit scared of him. He has an easy way with quite extreme violence that is unsettling to “normal” people.
-Vex is not great talker. He has a good line in nihilistic sarcasm and puns but beyond that verbal communication is not his forte.
-A high functioning sociopath he is not the most empathetic individual but he is fiercely loyal to the few who are close to him.
-He kills with no compunction what so ever and will happily do a “bad thing” for a good reason.
-As souvarine says “my friend doesn’t do threats, he does startlingly accurate forecasts”. Vex does not do hyperbole. It he tells you he's going to hit you if you don't stop, then stop, or he will hit you. To his mind this if completely reasonable, after all you were warned.
-He likes a good fight for a good cause, but will settle for a good fight if that's all that's going.
-He likes the finer things in life, food, drink, clothes, ships, women.
-He dresses well, tailored shirts and waistcoats with smart smart trousers and well polished boots. Sleeves rolled up exactly the same number of turns on each arm “looking third good isn't something you leave to chance”.
-You will almost always see him with an expensive cigar in his mouth.
-While he enjoys a drink and you'll often see him drinking, you'll hardly ever see him drunk.
-He finds relationships with women particularly difficult and so prefers (mostly) to pay for his “company”.
-He's short and very well built, clearly from a high gravity world.
-He not handsome, not ugly per se but definitely not a looker. Not helped by a scar running down the left side of his face.
-He is not mad. He doesn't rage out, he doesn't lose his shit. He is rational and lucid, even when he's casually shattering a knee cap, of pushing a stiletto under your fingernail.
-He's friends with people who have a skill set he respects, not because he likes their personality. This is why he likes Al-pocalypse, he sees past the personality very quickly because it doesn't interest him and sees a very competent pilot who almost every opponent will underestimate. The fact that Al winds up Sou is just icing on the cake!
-He acts first and sorts it out later. This is rather at odds with Sou, who prefers to have a plan and stick to it. This is one of the skills he most respects Sou for.
-Sees the empire as the lesser of evils and supports Arissa goals about piracy etc. Mostly his loyalty to the empire comes from his loyalty to Sou and a desire to get paid.
History
-He was taken from a transport by pirates as child and put to work in an off the books mining outpost. Having suffered cranial trauma in the initial attack he has no memory of his family or origins.
-Gave himself the name Dexter Vex.
-Bought from the mines by an imperial trader, Samuel, who made Vex his personal servant/bodyguard until Vex had worked off his buying price. This is why he hates slaves but doesn’t have a problem with imperial slavery.
-Samuel was killed by pirates 12 years ago (as of 3301). In retaliation Vex hunted the gang down and each in turn disabled their power plant, thrusters, and life support and left each one floating to suffocate to death. This has only been mentioned as “the incident from 12 years ago”
-Gave Souvarine the salty weasel, but not as charity, simply because Sou has earned it.
-Has a string of minor run ins with the law, mostly assault charges.
-Has a history with the woman who is now The Octopus. He didn't know but will probably find out during season 2 who he's now working for.
