forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=252982&highlight=john+rutherfordTL:DR... Spawn rates for materials in outcrops and meteorites etc on planets are not random. There are far, far more on the plains between craters than in the craters themselves, and there are the fewest in the canyons. So although canyons are fun and pretty they are the most barren in terms of materials. The plains between craters are by far the best places to look for the juicy metallic materials. High metal content and metal rich are the best planets to prospect for materials on too apparently. Something to do with the stronger magnetic field attracting more asteroids! Can't verify this myself but makes sense.
