Things suddenly make more sense in the whole "the first human interactions with the aliens will dictate how they react." That has been doing the rounds from FDev for a while.

Well, we've had barnacles with no way of interacting except shooting them. And active encouragement to shoot them. Sounds like a sealed fate to me :-(

From what I've heard it will be an actual alien spaceship turning up and more responsive to many different interactions.

With what? Send morse code using laser bursts?
You're right though the barnacles don't count. They're organic but not sentient. Now I don't know how pissed the owners will be when they find out we've been blowing them up but it'll be fun finding out.
There are if I remember correctly (feel free to correct me here) 3 major regions of the milky way which are locked off. Each is roughly the same size as the human bubble. This would support the idea that there are infact many alien civilizations. In fact I believe that FDev have said as much.
The problem now is after all of the "winter is coming" stuff on the live streams and the set up with new parts of space being locked off the surprise for 2.4 has to be aliens. If it's "Here's a bobblehead in the shape of David's penis" then they're going to have a mutiny in all but the most rabid FDev fans!

The last few things I've seen in AMAs and the like have taken a slightly different tone to the historic FD line on first contact.
In the early days we were told that how we interacted at the point of first contact would determine what happened - eg war or no war.
Lately the tone has changed...
D-Briz: "winter is coming" MB: 'don't go exploring without guns any more' (paraphrasing) Drew Wagar (official Elite author, wrote Reclamation): 'there's a reason all the Engineers stuff has happened now' [as in: exploring and defending yourself are no longer mutually exclusive]
My theory is: player actions have already decided the way first contact is going to go. Probably by blowing up barnacles. I think Thargoids own the barnacles, and I think they are going to be pissed off that we've shot them.

I am waiting for a massive coding error, which leads to the aliens spreading exponentially quickly (with a high exponent) and taking over the whole galaxy within the first 48 hours.
