Ok, being as I am in work and don't have access to most of the useful Elite sites. Rail guns: what are their pros and cons? What are they good and not so good against? And so on.

They are particularly good against hulls but very good against shields too, as they deal both thermic and kinetic damage.
When weapons strike ships a calculation is done as to how much of the damage is sustained by the hull and how much passes through to the modules, according to the ship's hardness rating and the weapon's damage penetration. I think with rail guns have a special modifier which ensures they always deal the most damage to modules. I've read this but haven't seen or looked for it in game.
They have a charge time of an eighth of a second, during which you have to hold the trigger. After that the shot is instantaneous (like a pulse laser). This means they are difficult to land on small targets.
They come in fixed variants only and generate a lot of heat.
I think they're best for module sniping large ships once the shields go down.

All rail builds are often used for assassinations. The disadvantage with them is that they only have 30 ammo. Not good for RES. Great for assassination missions. Conda's become your bitch!

Yes, a lack of ammo will be a pain in the hole. I may have to mix it up a bit then, 4 beams to deplete shields and take down the smaller ships and the two rails to give anything larger a very bad day.

They will certainly do that. If you can get them to land on a module they basically become a "I want you're power plant to go offline now" button.

Well 4x size 1 beams and 2x size 2 rails works wonderfully! Happily solo condas in my little asp explorer.
Next for 6x rails, will either be even better or a commanders log post!
