Hi guys
I started this so we can settle a question which is inconstant in Elite - interstellar communication.
Elite itself doesn't know where it sits with this. Some things (Galnet, text comms) seem to be instantaneous wherever you are in the galaxy. Other things (like the courier missions and the Corruption Reports in Powerplay) require messages to be physically taken by a courier.
We ought to decide where we sit on this for consistency.
Personally, I like the idea that in 3302 there is no way to for a message to travel between stars in a useful timeframe other than being carried by a vessel with a frame shift drive. This creates opportunities for intercepting messengers and the like. For the purposes of our logs at least, instant communication could be limited to within systems.
What do you think?

I hold a different view:
Instant communication across interstellar is possible. However, it is totally insecure due to the [insert sci-fi physics here] method of its transmission - every channel is an open channel and broadcast, narrow-beam and encryption is impossible (this is fine for the usual in-wing banter, distress calls and the like). But, If you want to send any form of sensitive message, transport secret information or start plotting a coup with no one knowing, the only way to get the message securely across the vast distances of space is by a secure and competent currier.

Yes, that's good thinking.
That's easier to reconcile with the way the game works. I second that.

I don't even think it needs reconciling with the way the game works. Think how many missions are "transport sensitive data" type missions.
In lore it's also why you don't have access to a database of trade data where ever you are. Live trade data is closely guarded by traders and stations alike so the only way of getting it is from the horses mouth.
I like this, insecure tight band communication for chat and text (quantum entangled pairs?). Data couriers for sensitive and bulk data.

I'd also suggest that the instant communication is extremely easy to triangulate it's source. This would mean you would /not/ communicate if you were on a mission deep into enemy territory, running a big smuggling mission or similar.
