And another question on this:
Reading the wiki, some ships are only available if you're aligned with a certain faction, ie. Imperial Clipper, Federal Assault Ship and so on. How can Sou access the FAS if he is aligned to the Empire?

Good question! Sou's alignment to the Empire is an RP thing.
You can do the 'Naval Ascension Missions' for either side, regardless of alignment.
By default, all players are members of the politically neutral Pilot's Federation. Players become 'Friendly' then 'Allied' with the major powers by raising their reputation with minor factions that are aligned to that Major Faction. But they can be Allied to all three, or Hostile to all three - the states are not mutually exclusive, and correspond only to how many missions you've done / what your reputation is with a given number of minor factions aligned to a Major Power. At present I think Souvarine is actually Allied to the Empire and Friendly with the Alliance and the Federation.
The availability of ships is tied to your rank with each of the Navies (Federal Auxiliary and Imperial Navy). You don't actually become a ranking officer in those navies - they're honorary ranks offered to civilians (think of it like the Territorial Army!)
I've actually done quite a lot of Naval Ascension Missions for the Federation, just because they popped up. So now I've got a middling rank with the Federal Navy Auxiliary, hence the FAS. I won't mention that in Commanders' Log, because it doesn't fit with my idea of the character.

Ahh cheers, so I should probably start looking at doing naval missions for the federation and the alliance at some point to ensure i have access to all the fun ships?

Like all things in Elite, the faction-specific ships aren't better or worse than the others - only different. Imperial ships tend to be fast, Federal ships tend to have heaps of armour and very good pitch speed.
The Alliance don't currently have any faction-specific ships, but we anticipate them adding these in future seasons. Lore-wise, there's a very famous shipyard called New Rossyth in Alliance space.

The RP reason I gave was that IPEC gave me one for undercover work. Given the level of corruption in this universe its not unreasonable to assume there is some unscrupulous individuals selling them on the black market.
Unfortunately there are no rank or ships for the alliance as of yet. Shame, because in the law they are supposedly the best ships out there.

Useful thing I've found out this evening:
If, when you get your "Navy Ascension" mission, you take as many different Navy Ascension missions as you can fit in the time limit. Yes only the first one gives the next level, but all the rest give you really big bonuses to your navy rank. I accidently did this just now and am already 30% through the next rank!
