We should start getting together for a fight night. Go somewhere out of the way and duke it out.
Should have themes for example
Rail guns only. Planetary dogfights Ice asteroid belt.
Each night should have rules, is, ship class, cost of ship etc etc.
Could be quiet interesting, what do you guys think?

I have had one thought regarding the potential cost of this:
If either combatant is in a ship who's rebuy cost is more than makes them feel comfortable (I'd guess >400k credits approx.) Then combat will run until one ship drops to below 40% hull, instead of ship destruction. This will save bankrupting us through rebuys.

I like the idea of having a ship with size 3 power plant, a size 2 cargo hold and under 2 million.
Take 2 tons of gold each and fight until you can bust open the other's cargo hatch and steal the gold.
Sidewinder night would also be good.

Well that was a lot of fun! Buggy racing may be one of my new favourite things. We should try shorter races next time - make it more of a sprint. I am still also a firm advocate of turret use!
Class 3 power plant is a good limit for ship racing. Gives lots of freedom. I think Sidewinders would be perfect though - they have everything we need for planetary shenanigans.

A sidewinder is not nearly as nimble as a viper or eagle though... Tough choices. I agree with turret use. The race got more interesting when I had to juggle pips around too. I also like the 'blue shell' effect of being in front

Yes to both the short races and the turret use.
Eagle and Sidey is a fair comparison. Nimble speed vs toughness.
Viper is in a different league. I think any fight that includes both a viper and an eagle is going to be inherently one sided.

I'm tempted for stuff like this to go with Ronan's suggestion where the PP size is what we use as the balance.
So Size 2 would be Sidey, Eagle and Hauler (for those feeling particularly brave)
Size 3 would be Viper (3&4), Cobra (3&4) and DBS.

That's a better idea.
Essentially, what we want to do is create a scenario in which ship build is actually nowhere near as important as flying skill. That means choice of venue is paramount. After that, we can specify a maximum powerplant class for the race.
