So Tom had this great idea where he and Al would go mining in a Hi or Has RES and Ronan an I would go in as wing mates to defend them. It's an interesting twist on our usual. and we all get a share of the profits.

Let's do this!

Yeah, sounds good. I'll bring a python for that bit of extra cargo space.

Another twist on this...
FD are keen for the community to get harvesting the barnacles. There have been several Galnet articles proposing this and the Canonn are appealing for them to fix the station blackouts. We could go mining for these?

I understand that to involve either 1) lots of searching for barnacles 2) lots of game mode switching at one barnacle

Most likely option 2 unless we use the Canonn's list.

That was a great mining run. Lots of fun.

Yeah, thoroughly enjoyed that. I may look at building a dedicated escort, with a collector and cargo space that we can also use as a carrier when the smaller ships reach overload.
Unfortunately I suspect the best ship for this would be an Anaconda!

Switching between collecting and combat is annoying. We would have to be strict about taking turns. Maybe even do three of those to one with mining lasers.

I found the python worked well for that with minimal refit.

Having been thinking on how this worked, and the various levels of shot up we all got. I think the following idealised ratios apply:
1: Pure miners: pure combatants:
Minors 3:2 Combatants
2: miners: Mixed Build: Combatants:
2:1:1

Rob raised the very good point that our total mining profits aren't split. Which means a carrier / collector vessel will bill the majority of the profits when we return to port. Only a 5% bonus of those will be given to the other players.
The other thing to remember is that the mining ships don't get a share of any bounty vouchers the escorts earn from blowing up pirates.
Given this, we may be better off all going out in mining ships with at least a gun or two, and using strength in numbers as our deterrent rather than one or two heavily-armed escorts. This would mean that we would need to mine close together as a pack. One mining Keelback with crappy pulse turrets is easy pickings, but four similar ships would be more formidable.
The other option is to fully specialise - two players go out to a HRES as dedicated miners, the other two go out as dedicated bounty hunters to protect them. The mutual benefits of this would be:
- miners get the % bonus to profits that come from mining in a HRES; - bounty hunters get 5% trade bonus of the miners' profits, as well as the bounty vouchers they earn.
I know that earning money isn't the main motivation but it's nice to have an incentive for teamwork.

I think the mixed bag actually is the way to go. 1 dedicated combat ship is actually OK so long as there is a second ship with some combat capability to help deal with wings. If the multi role has some cargo space then the keel backs can unload some cargo to them to maintain their stay.
The strength in numbers thing may work better when the AI improves but I don't think it's clever enough to actually be deterred by a wing. And as the AI has a tendency of picking on one ship I think we'd find that staying around would be pretty difficult.

I'm happy doing this in the python with refinery and collectors. Could even add some mining lasers.

Or, do we all get in 100% mining ships and pick a point away from a REZ to mine in? Hassle free mining and we'd still each get a 15% bonus from the shared profits.

As opposed to bending over rocks, which is a different game.
