I'm sure there must be more to barnacles than shoot them or ignore them.
We know they are a source of meta-alloys, which are some kind of alloy. As they produce alloys they must consume metals, right?
I'm going to try feeding one. I'm going to get canisters of lots of different metals in my asp explorer and offer them to a barnacle. First drop the canister next to it. If that doesn't do anything after all the canisters are dropped then I'll shoot all the canisters and go home. It's most likely that nothing will happen.
Anyone else want in?

To this end, any helpful miner providing me with a canister of either osmium or platinum will be paid with 100,000cr worth of gold, or other choice substance.

Interesting experiment! Have a look at the Canonn Interstellar Research Group online... Lots of barnacle scientists

I tried the experiment with all the commonly available metals, some progenitor cells and a few other bits. No effect.
I paused to take some pictures before shooting them and then the game crashed, removing the canisters.
I'll try again with a selection of rarer materials, including the osmium that Al found. I'll pay for painite too!

I suspect that there's nothing more to discover about the barnacles themselves as yet, but they'll provide the catalyst for the next twist in the story. I.e. angry aliens turn up demanding to know why we've been stealing their meta-alloys. Or similar.
